So here we are in the hopes of maintaining our regular lively, witty, and often bizarre conversations. More importantly, we're here in the hopes of remaining friends. We've done amazingly well in dealing with each other so far, and I think we would all agree life would be less something without one another. So, here's to us...vive le singe de la pipe! *Monkey dances and plays symbols.*

The American President

I love this movie. I showed the final speech in class. We got some interesting discussion out of it. Then I looked at a student's outline for their personal belief paper. "I believe that political persuasion has no place in the college classroom."

Now, I try to make it a point not to attempt persuasion. I simply offer up discussions and ask them to debate, and I always say things like, "however, you may disagree," or "if you disagree, tell me. Debate me." However, I can't help but feel like this is a shot.

  1. it wasn't a shot. if you are going to introduce politics, you have to be able to deal with both sides. it sounds like you are giving them ample oppurtunity to express their own opinions. some people are just irked by politics in general. i very seriously doubt that the student was criticizing you--they probably just really dislike the whole subject.

bottom line: remember what you've already told them. these essays are their microphones; you don't offend. those comments to them only work if you don't get upset, nervous, or offended by what they say.

  2. I wish stupidity had no place in the college classroom. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case. :(
